This paper presents results of the first phase “Dielectric Elastomer Cooperative Microactuator Systems” (DECMAS), a project within German Research Foundation Priority Program 2206, “Cooperative Multistable Multistage (KOMMMA). The goal is development soft cooperative microactuator system combining high flexibility with large-stroke/high-frequency actuation and self-sensing capabilities. softness due to completely polymer-based approach using dielectric elastomer membrane structures specific silicone bias designed achieve large strokes. thus avoids fluidic or pneumatic compo-nents, enabling, e.g., future smart textile applications sensing, haptics, even acoustic features. introduces design concepts soft, single-actuator demonstrator along experimental characterization, before expanding it 3 × 1 system. used experimentally study coupling effects, supported by finite element lumped parameter simulations, which represent basis for control methods. Finally, also new methodology fabricate metal-based electrodes sub-micrometer thickness membrane-straining capability extremely low resistance. These will enable further miniaturization towards microscale applications.
